Chiropractor Dr. Herman Glass talks about his thriving practice in Detroit.
Dr. Herman Glass is a well-known figure in the chiropractic industry, having established a successful practice that has thrived for over forty years. Throughout his career, he has achieved numerous accomplishments, including being the proud owner and director of Glass Chiropractic Health Plaza since 1985.

In addition to his successful practice, Dr. Glass has also been involved in various prestigious positions. In 1985, he was appointed as the first chiropractor to the Michigan Cancer Foundation Board. He was also selected by Governor James Blanchard in February 1988 to serve on the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and was re-appointed by Governor John Engler from 1992 to 1996. Furthermore, he served as a staff physician at New Center Hospital's pioneering Chiropractic Program in 1988 and as an adjunct professor at Texas Chiropractic College in Houston from 1985 to 1995. He also served as the president of the American Black Chiropractic Association from 1989 to 1992.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Glass and discuss his journey as one of the leading chiropractors in the nation. When asked about his practice today, he shared, "I have been practicing holistic wellness for many years, with a particular focus on holistic weight loss as an alternative to injectables. I have been practicing in Detroit for almost 40 years now, and I am proud to say that I am the only chiropractor who is also a member of the Detroit Medical Society. I receive regular referrals, and I am proud to say that all of my referral doctors have a diverse background, which adds to the strength of my practice."

We then asked Dr. Glass about the number of Black chiropractors across the country, to which he replied, "I was the youngest president of the American Black Chiropractic Association back in 1989 for four years. During my tenure, I was able to provide scholarships to young students who wanted to pursue a career in holistic chiropractic practice. Currently, the percentage of Black chiropractors in the United States is approximately 7% to 8% out of the 50 to 60 thousand doctors nationwide. I still attend the annual National Chiropractic Conference and have the opportunity to speak to doctors and interns, offering them words of wisdom based on my experience."

Moving on to the holistic aspect of his practice, Dr. Glass explained, "A holistic approach to healthcare involves considering the entire spectrum of a person's well-being. After practicing for over 40 years, I have learned to look beyond the symptoms and create a treatment plan that focuses on improving wellness and function in a natural and effective manner. For example, I have helped over 27 patients lose over 100 pounds and maintain their weight loss for more than a year, which not only improves their physical health but also their mental well-being. My weight loss program is scientifically advanced and uses plant-based natural appetite control and glucose regulation, along with a thermogenic natural component. I also work closely with primary care referral doctors to achieve optimum wellness goals for each patient."

When asked about achieving wellness through holistic health, Dr. Glass responded, "As chiropractors, we are the only licensed doctors who do not prescribe pharmaceutical medications. This allows us to focus on a holistic approach to healthcare. We are not physical therapists, but we do write orders for them to carry out their work. The spine houses the central nervous system, which controls everything in the body. Without a healthy spine, the brain cannot communicate with other parts of the body. This is where my team and I come in. I have patients from all walks of life, and my oldest patient is 99 years old, with over 12 patients in their 90s."

We were curious if Dr. Glass had any hobbies outside of medicine, to which he replied, "Yes, I believe in maintaining a balance between work and play. I have three hobbies that I enjoy regularly: golf, scuba diving, and snow skiing. I am a member of a local Detroit golf league, and I try to play at least twice a week. I have been a certified scuba diver for over 37 years and have had the opportunity to dive in different parts of the world. Recently, on my 70th birthday, I went on my seventh shark encounter scuba dive off the coast of Bimini. I am also a member of the Jim Dandy Ski Club, the oldest Black ski club in the country, for 40 years. I have won gold medals in giant slalom ski race competitions at the National Brotherhood of Skier's conference for the past three years in a row. I believe that having a balance of work and play is essential for a fulfilling life. As I always tell my patients, 'Health is a journey, not a destination.'"

Dr. Glass has also been actively involved in teaching, consulting, and serving on various medical boards. He taught Anatomy and Physiology at the Detroit Career Development Center from 1983 to 1987 and was named Chiropractor of the Year by the American Black Chiropractic Association in 1992. He also has a decade of consulting experience with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan and as an Independent Medical Examiner Consultant for American Medical Evaluation Company and Phoenix Evaluation Company. Since 2003, he has been on the Medical Advisory Board for First Fitness Weight Loss Corporation.
