Next week on Coronation Street, the residents of Weatherfield are hit with some devastating news. Word spreads that Les Battersby, a familiar face on the street, has passed away. His daughter Leanne and step-daughter Toyah are united in their grief, but there is one person who is struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Chesney Brown, who is already having a tough week, receives the news of his former step-father's death. As fans of the show may remember, Les and Chesney formed quite the dynamic duo in the mid 2000s after Les married Chesney's mom, Cilla Battersby-Brown. However, Chesney's week has been far from easy, as he narrowly avoided being hit by a van in the Freshco's car park and is struggling to make ends meet while taking care of his and his wife Gemma's five children on his own.
Trying to hide his grief, Chesney tells Gemma's mother Bernie Winters that he and Les weren't very close. But for viewers, Les was a mainstay on the street for ten years, from 1997 to 2007. The Battersby family certainly made waves when they first arrived in 1997, and Les quickly became a fan favorite.
Recently, actor Bruce Jones, who played Les, shared his feelings about the decision to kill off his character off-screen. He explained, "Show bosses already emailed me over a fortnight ago to tell me what was happening. I actually thought, well fine, I played him for ten years. It gives me closure. Maybe it will stop people asking me all the time when I’m going back, if I’m going back." He also added, "They gave me ten years and I invented a great character and it became a great hit with everyone. I wish them all the luck in the world."
Fans can catch these emotional scenes on Friday, November 29th at 8pm on ITV1 or from 7am on ITVX.
