The Good Box is a wonderful charity that has been providing care packages to thousands of people experiencing homelessness for over six years now. However, they are facing a difficult situation and may have to shut down due to financial pressures. Gali Blacher, the co-founder of The Good Box, recently shared with 9news.com.au that their Melbourne warehouse is at risk of being lost because they are struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for their personalized boxes.
Blacher explained, "We used to operate out of a small space that was enough for us, but now the demand for our boxes has skyrocketed. It's becoming harder and harder to keep up. We simply don't have enough space to store all the generous donations we receive. It breaks our hearts to have to turn away these wonderful items because we don't have the room for them. We are struggling to keep up with the growing need for our services."
Sadly, The Good Box is not the only charity facing this issue. In fact, the number of people experiencing homelessness in Australia is estimated to be over 122,000, according to the ABS. And while only 6.2% of these individuals are sleeping rough, the majority of homelessness is hidden. This includes people living in insecure housing, overcrowded spaces, or couch surfing, as reported by Homelessness Australia.
Since 2018, The Good Box has sent out more than 30,000 care packages to people in need. However, Blacher shared that the demand has reached an unprecedented level. "We have never been busier. This means that there is more need than ever before," she said. "We have people experiencing homelessness who are living in emergency accommodation, but we also have individuals who have a roof over their head but can't afford basic necessities like food. It's heartbreaking to hear stories of parents having to choose between feeding their child or paying for their school uniform. These are the tough situations we are trying to help with."
The charity is now pleading with the community for donations to ensure they can continue their mission of assisting vulnerable members of society. Blacher stated, "We urgently need the community's support to secure a larger operating area so we can continue our work effectively. Just the other day, we received a call from a woman who had fled a domestic violence situation and had a premature baby in the hospital. She was sleeping in her car with her other children because she didn't want to go back home. The hospital referred her to The Good Box. This is just one of the many heartbreaking situations we are trying to help with."
In order to continue their important work, The Good Box needs our help. Let's come together as a community and support this amazing charity so they can continue to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. Together, we can ensure that no one has to go without basic necessities like food and hygiene products.
