The Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha, in a statement on Sunday, urged all political parties to refrain from involving children in any election-related activities. This call comes after a number of complaints were filed by the Biju Janata Dal against BJP candidates for allegedly violating the model code of conduct by using infants in their campaigns.

The BJD has accused BJP's candidate for Bhubaneswar, Aparajita Sarangi, and Sambalpur MLA candidate Jaynarayan Mishra Sarangi of engaging children in their election campaigns. And just recently, the BJD also alleged that BJP's Berhampur candidate, Pradip Panigrahy, was using children for campaigning activities.

In a communication to all political parties, N Thirumala Naik, the Additional Chief Electoral Officer, reminded them of the Election Commission of India's instructions to not involve children in any type of election activity. He also pointed out that his office has been receiving numerous complaints about children being used in rallies and campaigns by political parties.

Naik emphasized the need to follow the 2014 order of the Bombay High Court, which prohibits the use of children in election activities. He instructed all political parties and candidates in Odisha to ensure that they do not engage child labor in any election-related work or activities. He also reminded them to comply with the provisions of the Child Labour Act.

Specifically, Naik requested that political parties do not use children in any form during election campaigns, such as distributing posters or pamphlets, participating in slogan shouting, or attending campaign rallies and meetings. However, he clarified that the mere presence of a child accompanied by their parent or guardian, who is not involved in any election activity, will not be considered a violation of these guidelines.

In conclusion, the Chief Electoral Officer urges all political parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of children and to refrain from involving them in any election-related activities. This is not only in line with the instructions of the Election Commission of India, but also in accordance with the law and the best interest of the children.
