This is the shocking moment a car smashed into the living room of a home in Cambridgeshire

On arriving at the site, officers and firefighters found the car registered to Michael Wilson, with the driver’s airbag activated.

Earlier on, the 34-year-old had contacted the police to say that he had been burgled.

He claimed he had awoken after a night of drinking to discover that the entrance to his residence in Acacia Avenue was left wide open.

Wilson said his Audi had been taken, alongside a watch, earrings and £200 in cash.

Miraculously, nobody was hurt in the incident

However, forensic officers uncovered his DNA on the airbag, demonstrating that he had crashed his car into the house and fled the scene.

At first, the driver refused to admit that he had made a false statement to hide the fact that he was intoxicated, and was responsible for the frightening incident in the early hours of 21 August 2021.

But in February Wilson pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, attempting to pervert the course of justice and causing criminal damage at Cambridge Crown Court.

DC Pete Wise, who investigated, said: ‘This was a very frightening event for the occupants of the house.

'The CCTV footage displays the alarming and destructive moment Wilson drives his car through the wall into the living room at speed.

’It is fortunate that the two people in the house at that time were upstairs in bed. Had it been otherwise, the consequences could have been much more severe.

’We take incidents of this kind very seriously and justice will always prevail in the end.’

Wilson was sentenced at Huntingdon Law Courts on Friday, where he was given two years in prison, suspended for two years.

He was instructed to complete 160 hours of unpaid work and pay £12,000 to the victims, at a cost of £500 each month.
