Capturing a festive night out is like creating a Renaissance masterpiece.
The spectrum of human emotion was on full display this past Friday night in Swansea town centre. As revellers enjoyed the last night out before Christmas, photographs taken captured a scene that could be likened to a renaissance painting.

The night, sometimes referred to as 'Mad Friday' or 'Black Eye Friday' for its alcohol-fuelled antics, proved to be a memorable one. In one photo, a man is being held on the floor by police officers and placed under arrest outside Bambu Beach Bar. The officers are surrounded by a group of young people, three of whom can be seen animatedly speaking to the policemen, while two women standing next to them pose for the camera.

Photographer Dimitris Legakis, who took the photos, was flattered to be compared to the Manchester photo taken by Joel Goodman, as well as renaissance artists including Théodore Géricault. He said: “To make a painting takes a lot of effort and skill. What I have done is something you cannot replicate. They are both unique in their own way. If what I have captured resembles a renaissance or romantic painting, I am extremely flattered. You have to really try hard, to be aware of what might happen, to be in the right place at the right time.”

In another photo, one of the men is now on the ground and taking a selfie in front of the officers, while another holds a policemen’s hat and a third poses for the camera in front of a large group of spectators. The third photo displays a man and woman arguing with a police officer on the hectic street, while another woman lovingly hugs the pair of them. Other pictures captured a man being dragged along the ground by police in handcuffs, and a woman vomiting in the street.

It's incredible to think that such an ordinary night out can turn into something so remarkable. It's a reminder of the power of photography, and the way it can capture a moment in time and turn it into something beautiful.
