Burger King India recently announced that they have stopped using tomatoes in their food preparations, joining the list of other fast food chains like McDonald's and Subway. In a message on their website, Burger King cited "quality" and "supply" issues as the main reasons behind the decision.
The company requested customers to have "patience and understanding" as they work to find a solution to the current "unpredictable conditions on the quality & supply of tomato crops". To lighten the mood, some Burger King outlets have reportedly placed a humorous notice saying, "Even tomatoes need a vacation... we are unable to add tomatoes to our food."
The soaring tomato prices have been the cause of major disruptions in the supply chain of QSR chains. The retail price of tomato in some parts of the country had gone up to Rs 200 per kilogramme due to heavy rains. This led to the government having to import tomatoes for the first time, which are currently coming from Nepal.
In July, McDonald's had stopped using tomatoes in most of its stores in the northern and eastern parts of the country due to the non-availability of quality products. Subway India followed suit soon after.
Fortunately, the situation is starting to improve as the arrival of the fresh tomato crop in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh has started in wholesale mandis, cooling down the prices. As per government data, all-India average prices for both retail and wholesale tomatoes have come down from a month ago.
We hope that soon Burger King will be able to serve fresh and quality tomatoes in their food preparations. Until then, we thank you for your patience and understanding.
