Anita Dobson has given an update on her husband, the legendary Sir Brian May, and his recovery from a recent stroke. The 77-year-old music icon suffered a health scare earlier this year, but his wife has reassured fans that he is doing much better now.
According to Anita, Sir Brian's stroke left him unable to use his arm and doctors advised him not to travel in order to keep his heart rate down. However, his famous guitar-playing skills quickly returned and now Anita has revealed that he has been back at the piano as well.
"He's much better now, he's stabilized, which is brilliant," Anita shared at the TRIC Christmas Lunch. "I just hope we don't have any more reoccurrences. He's got the use of that arm back now, which was a bit of a challenge."
Anita also confirmed that Sir Brian has been playing the piano at home, swapping his guitar for the soothing sounds of Beethoven. "I love it – the piano in the house is really relaxing," she said. "He didn't actually try [to play an instrument] until after he had recovered quite a bit. And then he very slowly started to pick up an acoustic guitar and gradually just exercise the muscles."
She went on to explain that Sir Brian is retraining his brain to use his arm again, which can be a scary and challenging process. "He's just retraining the messages from your brain to that arm, that it's actually okay to do what it used to do," Anita shared. "It was scary."
Despite his health challenges, Sir Brian has been keeping busy. He recently joined his Queen bandmate, Roger Taylor, at a launch event for the rebuild of their debut album, Queen I, which is now 50 years old. The duo even teased the possibility of new music in the future.
"We can still play. We can still sing. So I don't see why not," Roger said when asked about the potential for new Queen music. The band has also been touring with Adam Lambert as the lead singer and released a previously unheard song featuring Freddie Mercury in 2022.
Anita also revealed that Sir Brian has been involved in many other pursuits, including earning a PhD in astrophysics and advocating for animal rights. Despite his many talents and interests, Anita believes that her husband's intellect can sometimes be a bit overwhelming.
"He's too clever for his own good," she joked. "His brain gets overloaded." But it's clear that Sir Brian's passion for music and his determination to recover have helped him through this difficult time. And, as Anita says, "He's good to go once more."
