Borderlands: What happened & why has it been so mishandled?
Has Borderlands 3 killed the franchise? This is a question that has been on the mind of many long-time fans of the series. For years, I was an avid fan of Borderlands 2, playing it for hours on end with my friends. We all found it to be an incredibly enjoyable game, with its numerous DLCs and never-ending content.

When Borderlands 3 was released, we were all excited to see how the franchise had improved. Unfortunately, it was a major letdown. The game was nearly identical to the previous installment, and it lacked the same sense of humor. It was still playable, but it was far from the same experience that we had all been hoping for.

Interestingly, Borderlands 3 sold much fewer copies than its predecessor. According to Wikipedia, it sold five million less than Borderlands 2. This is quite telling, considering that it was released seven years later. It felt like a step back, especially in terms of technology. For example, Borderlands 2 wasn't even an open-world game, and people expected that Borderlands 3 would be.

This is a real shame, as Borderlands is credited with inventing the looter shooter concept, yet nowadays, many people think it was Destiny that first introduced it. It's a shame, too, because Destiny takes itself too seriously and is far from the same style of Borderlands. Unfortunately, Destiny 2 doesn't get talked about much anymore either.

Considering the fact that it's been seven years since Borderlands 3, it seems likely that another seven years will go by before Borderlands 4 is released. If that's the case, then it won't be out until 2026. With no word from developers, we can only speculate about what a fourth game would look like.

In my opinion, a proper open-world would be a must, as well as improved graphics. The cel-shading looked great in Borderlands 3, but it's likely that a new visual trick is needed to make the game stand out. I'd also like to see improved gunplay and more vehicles. Additionally, introducing rival teams, similar to Dark Souls, could liven things up.

Finally, new script writers should be hired, preferably actual comedians. The jokes in Borderlands 3 were mostly dad jokes, and it was quite cringey. There's so much that could be done with a Borderlands game, yet people seem to be forgetting about it. If developers don't hurry up and create a new game, it looks like a reboot might be necessary.
