Mumbai is set to witness a grand celebration of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival this year with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deploying 10,000 staffers and 71 control rooms to ensure a smooth and safe immersion of the idols on Anant Chaturdashi. As many as 198 artificial and 69 natural immersion spots have been identified and 468 steel plates have been put at 'chowpatties' for vehicles carrying the Ganapati idols.
Apart from this, 46 German rafts have been deployed to accommodate larger idols. To ensure safety, 764 lifeguards and 48 motorboats have been stationed at the immersion sites. Additionally, 150 nirmalya kalash with 282 vehicles have been arranged to collect floral offerings and other waste.
Apart from the standard measures taken for a safe and secure celebration, the BMC has also taken additional measures in collaboration with Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking. For effective illumination at the immersion points, 1,083 floodlights and 27 searchlights have been installed. Moreover, 121 changing rooms have been set up for citizens participating in the immersion and 75 first aid centres as well as 61 mobile clinics have been readied.
To ensure the safety of citizens, the BMC has urged people to avoid entering the sea while immersing idols and to seek assistance from trained personnel. They must also stay away from dark and secluded areas and not spread rumours or believe in unverified information. This year, Ganpati mandals in Mumbai have blended traditional festivities with social awareness to make the celebrations more eco-friendly.
