Kellie Ford, an independent Black designer, is calling out Pharrell Williams and Louis Vuitton for allegedly taking her concept that she introduced online two years ago. The whole situation started after Pharrell debuted Louis Vuitton’s new SS24 collection at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
Ford shared her thoughts in a series of TikTok videos. She explained that her original design of an LV shopping bag inserted into plastic to create a stylish handbag went viral in 2021 with around 10 million views. Now, two years later, Ford believes her concept was copied and incorporated into LV’s new menswear collection.
In her videos, Ford stated that she is not interested in suing Pharrell or LV. Instead, she is more concerned about the concept she believes they took from her.
“It ain’t about suing, it ain’t about infringement. The thing is they took the concept…The concept is the same. The concept is, the bag being a normal paper bag being worn at leisure. That’s what they did. They took the concept of the bag,” she explained. “It’s the concept, not the actual bag itself. Yes, it’s their bag. But it’s my sauce.”
The debate over Ford’s claims continues, with some claiming her design wasn’t copied and others encouraging her to reach out to LV for a potential partnership. No word on if the designer has connected with Pharrell or LV yet.
