August is Black Business Month and the businesses of Macon, Georgia are thriving. Kaviar Beauty Bar is the Cinderella story of the community. It was opened in 2020 by Leigha Axom and Andria Sands, and the bar offers an array of services from hair styling to even teeth bedazzling.
Axom told 41 NBC that she was unaware of the resources available to her to help build her business. She said, “As a Black entrepreneur, you have to show up everywhere that you can. Tap in and read about the different things that are taking place in the community.” Kaviar Beauty Bar has been featured in Macon Black Pages, a directory created to promote Black-owned businesses in Middle Georgia.
Alex Habersham, the publisher of the Macon Black Pages, commented on the goal of the pages, “The objective of the Black Pages is to get more of that revenue, more of that cash, more of that disposable income to circulate in the African American community, which will benefit the entire community.” He believes African American consumers should be spending their money towards Black businesses, as they spend more than $3.5 billion a year.
Axom credits Black Pages and nonprofits, such as the Central Georgia Coalition of Black Businesses, for leading the pack on giving Black entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed. To help with this, the Central Georgia Coalition of Black Businesses is holding their inaugural event, the Black Business and Community Expo on Aug. 19. The event will be held at the Macon Coliseum and will feature vendors, live entertainment, back-to-school resources, education, and networking for small businesses.
Axom said that since Kaviar Beauty Bar has been pushing themselves to get more involved in the community, they are gaining more customers from everywhere. This is just one example of how Black Business Month is helping companies in Macon, Georgia.
