Two legendary figures in the world of New Orleans hip-hop, Birdman and his brother Slim, have been recognized for their contributions to the music industry. YouTube has announced that the founders of Cash Money Records will be receiving the prestigious Leaders and Legends Award at the upcoming YouTube Music gala in Los Angeles.
In an interview with Billboard, Birdman shared his gratitude for the recognition, saying, "I appreciate Lyor [Cohen] and YouTube for acknowledging our achievements and the work we continue to do. This honor not only shines a light on us, but also on all the artists who have been a part of Cash Money Records or have been connected to our label. They share in this honor as well."
Slim added, "For years, we've let our music do the talking. But it feels amazing to be recognized for our contribution to the culture."
The brothers founded Cash Money Records in their hometown of New Orleans in 1991. In the 33 years since, the label has been home to some of the biggest names in the industry, including Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Busta Rhymes, Drake, Mystikal, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Lil Mo, and Bow Wow.
Tuma Basa, YouTube's director of Black music and culture, expressed the platform's commitment to promoting and celebrating the culture, saying, "We are proud to lead the charge in honoring Cash Money's impact through the leadership of Birdman and Slim. As a global platform, it is our responsibility to recognize and elevate the stories of Black trailblazers in the industry and remind the world of the immense influence of Black music on the culture. That's the essence of Leaders and Legends."
According to WGNO, Birdman and Slim were also recently presented with keys to the city of New Orleans by Mayor LaToya Cantrell on February 5th. Additionally, Birdman and Cash Money Millionaires will be celebrating 30 years in the music industry at this year's Essence Festival.
In related news, B.G., a former artist on Cash Money Records, has been ordered to complete substance abuse treatment, community service, and a GED program as part of his release from prison. This serves as a reminder of the challenges and obstacles faced by artists in the industry, and the importance of recognizing and celebrating their contributions.
