No Kid Hungry is a charity organization dedicated to eliminating food insecurity and ensuring families have access to meals. This summer, they are launching an awareness campaign to help children and teenagers access meals in the heat. With celebrities like Patti LaBelle, Kelly Rowland, Chefs Kwame Onwuachi, and Lorena Garcia, No Kid Hungry will help parents and caregivers find free meals with a few clicks.
During the year, families can depend on schools to provide reduced or free meals for their children. Unfortunately, when summertime rolls around, those options become limited. No Kid Hungry recently conducted a poll and discovered that many parents are struggling to afford groceries for their children. With the rising cost of living, some households are just one missed paycheck away from going hungry.
Free summer meal programs have existed for decades, such as The Black Panther Party's program from 1969 to 1980. Despite the programs’ success in feeding families during the summer months, their scope is limited. To address this issue, Congress has created the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. This act allows rural areas to offer more meal services, such as food transportation and pick-up options. It is also launching a nationwide program called Summer EBT, which will help parents purchase food throughout the summer and will launch in 2024.
No Kid Hungry is committed to helping the roll-out of these initiatives in rural areas with the help of their spokespeople. They are also making the site available to multilingual households. Patti LaBelle said, “Our nation’s children deserve a happy, healthy summer and that starts with being fed and nourished. It’s up to all of us to ensure all kids have the fuel they need to follow their dreams and that parents, grandparents, and caregivers have access to this essential program. One hungry child is one too many.”
