Mayor Beyoncé? Yes, you heard it right! After her successful 'Renaissance' tour that has earned her millions of dollars, boosted small business and local economies, Beyoncé has now been awarded the honorary title of Mayor of a city in California!
On Tuesday, August 28th, the Santa Clara City Council voted to make Beyoncé their honorary Mayor for a day and presented her with a key to the city. The honor was announced just a few days before Queen Bey's scheduled 'Renaissance' tour stop at Levi's Stadium.
Santa Clara spokesperson Michelle Templeton, in a statement said, “The city of Santa Clara is excited about Beyonce’s upcoming visit to the world-renowned Levi’s Stadium. Her concerts will certainly bring a great deal of energy and excitement.”
The proclamation, named after Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmore, praised Beyonce for her “tremendous cultural impact as one of the most influential pop culture figures, and attaining wide success with the R&B group Destiny’s Child, Beyonce broke out on her own as a solo artist.”
The statement further noted Beyoncé's astonishing 200 million records sold worldwide, along with her 32 Grammy awards, more than any other artist in history. In addition, Beyoncé was also honored for her 26 MTV Video Music Awards, 24 NAACP Image Awards, 35 BET Awards, and 17 Soul Train Music Awards.
The proclamation also highlighted Beyoncé's philanthropic work through her Bey Good Foundation, praising her “profound dedication to numerous charitable causes”.
Beyoncé isn't the first celebrity to be honored by the city of Santa Clara. Last month, Taylor Swift was given the honor ahead of her two-day stint at Levi's Stadium, as part of her 'Eras' world tour. Both superstars have been receiving immense fanfare worldwide with their competing tours.
It is estimated that Beyoncé will earn around $2.1 billion from her worldwide tour while Taylor is expected to be the first artist to make $1 billion in ticket sales, according to Bloomberg.
It is no surprise that the city of Santa Clara has honored these two incredibly talented and inspiring women. It is an honor well-deserved!
