Beekeeping Information Programme

Virajpet, Sept. 15: An information program on beekeeping was held at the Pudupadi Ayyappaswamy Temple hall in Betoli village, near Virajpet. The event was organized as part of a field experience camp conducted by the College of Forestry, Ponnampet.

Entomologist and beekeeping expert R.N. Kenchareddy participated as the resource person. He briefed farmers on beekeeping practices, colony management, income generation, and the direct and indirect benefits of the activity, noting that beekeeping can be adopted as a supplementary agricultural venture with minimal investment. He educated farmers on the scientific methods of installing bee boxes, managing colonies, ensuring bee health, providing nutrition, and harvesting honey. He further explained that, in addition to honey, significant extra income could be earned from by-products such as beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly.

He highlighted that beekeeping offers both direct income and indirect economic benefits to farmers, as the pollination activity of bees enhances crop productivity. He noted that pollination could potentially increase the yield of agricultural and horticultural crops by approximately 20–25%.
