Hywel Williams, a 40-year-old BBC TV director, is facing allegations that he killed a retired grammar school teacher, Peter Ormerod, by pushing him in the street. The incident reportedly happened on September 24, 2022 in Burry Port, Wales, after an argument regarding Welsh independence.
According to evidence presented in Swansea Crown Court, CCTV footage from inside the pub revealed the two men in animated conversation before they left the pub separately. However, they ended up meeting a short distance away outside a coffee shop, where Williams allegedly pushed the older man to the ground. Prosecutor Ian Wright KC stated that the push caused Peter Ormerod to hit the back of his head on the ground, after which he did not move again.
Tragically, Peter Ormerod succumbed to severe head and brain injuries four days later in hospital, on September 28 2022. Williams, who works as a director for the BBC Welsh language show Pobol Y Cwm - People of the Valley, admitted to the police and the ambulance crew that he had pushed the retired teacher, but he said he acted in self-defence.
When asked whether he had called Mr Ormerod a "fat little c***", Williams said he could not remember using those words, but accepted that he might have. His family released a statement, saying: "Peter was a well-respected teacher and member of the community a very loved and loving father, grandfather, brother and friend."
The trial is still ongoing and is expected to last two weeks. Williams denies manslaughter and insists he acted in self-defence.
