Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is taking action to reduce the mentorship gap for Black youth. Currently, there are 30,000 young people waiting for a mentor, and five times as many boys than girls on the list. To address this issue, BBBSA has launched the "It Takes Little to Be Big" campaign.
The campaign is designed to challenge the myths and misconceptions surrounding mentorship. To recruit more supporters, the organization is looking for mentors, volunteers, influencers, strategic partners, and alums. BBBSA has a long history of providing mentorship for over 400,000 young people in 5,000 communities across the United States. Over 70% of those they serve are from communities of color.
Artis Stevens, the BBBSA’s first Black CEO, commented, “We believe in the power of mentorship — we’ve seen its lifelong impact for the millions of kids we’ve served, and on the lives of Bigs who serve as mentors.”
Unfortunately, statistics show that one in three kids in America are growing up without a positive adult mentor. It is believed that this gap continues to grow due to perceived barriers and lack of knowledge about mentorship. To highlight the importance of mentorship, BBBSA has launched the "A Million Little Moments" digital storytelling initiative.
The campaign has received support from well-known figures. Dentsu Creative and Joshua Kissi, who has worked with Serena Williams, LeBron James and Ulta, have created a PSA featuring real Bigs and Littles. Grammy-nominated recording artist Aloe Blacc has created an anthem for the campaign called "Never Let You Down" which will be available for download. BBBSA has also partnered with Clear Channel Outdoor to launch billboards in several U.S. markets.
