Voorhees University is proud to announce that Shawn Walker, a former head coach of the basketball team, will be honored this year by being inducted into our Athletics Hall of Fame. Currently, Coach Walker leads the men's basketball team at Allen University, but his coaching career began right here at Voorhees in 1997. We recently shared the news of his achievement on our social media platforms, and the response has been nothing short of amazing.
In a statement, Coach Walker expressed his gratitude and excitement for being selected to join the Hall of Fame. He reflected on how Voorhees University gave him his first chance to be a head coach at the young age of 25. He also acknowledged the valuable lessons he learned during his time here, which have played a significant role in his success today.
During his time at Voorhees, Coach Walker led the Tigers Men's Basketball program for four seasons. Under his guidance, the team achieved great success, winning two regular-season EIAC Championships in 1998 and 2000, as well as an EIAC Tournament Championship in 1999. In total, the team won an impressive 81 games. This success did not go unnoticed, as Coach Walker was named the EIAC Coach of the Year during the 1998-1999 season.
Jasher Cox, the Director of Athletics at Allen University, spoke highly of Coach Walker's impact at Voorhees. He stated that his contributions go far beyond just statistics and championships. At Allen University, they are eagerly anticipating celebrating his success and achievements, as well as the lasting legacy he has created for future generations.
After his playing career at Elizabeth City State University, Coach Walker held several coaching positions at different schools. He began as a graduate assistant at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania in 1995. The following year, he returned to Voorhees as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach in 1997. He then went on to coach the women's basketball team at Elizabeth City State University in 2001, before transitioning to the men's team from 2003-2014. Coach Walker then held the same position at Grambling State University from 2014-2017, before returning to Elizabeth City State University from 2018-2022. Prior to taking over as the men's head coach at Allen University last season, he also served as an assistant coach for the women's team at Shaw University.
We are thrilled to announce that Coach Walker will officially be inducted into the Voorhees University Athletics Hall of Fame on September 7, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. This ceremony will take place in Denmark, South Carolina, where Coach Walker's impressive coaching journey all began.
