Baby's death still unexplained, Constance Marten's tragedy unsolved.
The tragic passing of baby Victoria has been shrouded in mystery since her remains were found in a plastic bag in a locked shed at an overgrown allotment in Brighton on March 1. An inquest into the death of the infant, whose date of birth was never confirmed, has been suspended while police investigate the circumstances of her passing.

Assistant coroner for West Sussex, Joanne Andrews, told the inquest hearing in Horsham that a post-mortem examination conducted at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital in London was inconclusive. She further noted that the inquest will only be resumed if sufficient reason to do so is established.

The inquiry into the death of baby Victoria has revealed that her mother, aristocrat Constance Marten, 35, and her boyfriend Mark Gordon, 48, have been charged with the manslaughter of the infant by gross negligence. The pair have also been charged with concealing a child’s birth and perverting the course of justice.

At the Old Bailey on Monday, Marten and Gordon were charged with two more offences - child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child. This alleged unlawful act or failure to take reasonable steps to protect the baby is said to have taken place between January 4 and February 27.

The accused appeared from HMP Bronzefield and HMP Belmarsh respectively before the Recorder of London, Judge Mark Lucraft KC. The plea and case management hearing was set back from August 18 to September 22, while a further mention hearing was scheduled for August 25 and a provisional trial has been scheduled for January 2 next year.
