This weekend, millions of Australians living along the east coast are being advised to prepare for a significant amount of rain. Senior meteorologist Angus Hines appeared on Weekend Today to warn viewers about the impending wet weather that is expected to hit most of the state. Interestingly, this comes after parts of Western Australia recently experienced the highest May rainfall in over 82 years.
The Bureau of Meteorology's seven-day forecast for New South Wales shows a chance of showers until next Thursday, with the heaviest impact predicted for the next few days. Hines explained that currently, the heaviest rainfall is occurring in western parts of the state, particularly in inland areas like Hillston where over 50mm of rain has already fallen. However, as the weekend progresses, the heavier rain is expected to move towards the more densely populated coastal areas of the state.
The Bureau has forecasted that the Illawarra district and potentially parts of Sydney will see the biggest rainfall totals. According to Hines, this is due to a combination of factors occurring in the atmosphere. A large high-pressure area south of Tasmania has been continuously sending showers to the east coast throughout the week. This has resulted in sporadic showers on and off throughout the week. However, this weather pattern is expected to intensify with the arrival of a disturbance in the upper atmosphere, which will turn the sporadic showers into more widespread and persistent rain over the weekend.
Thankfully, next week is expected to bring drier weather to most of the state, although the coastal areas may still see some rain. In the meantime, similar conditions were observed in Western Australia yesterday, as the state recorded significant rainfall totals. In fact, Bunbury saw its highest two-day rainfall total since August 2023, with 55 mm of rain recorded up until 9 am yesterday. Similarly, Cowaramup also experienced its most substantial rainfall in over two and a half years, with 60 mm recorded over a 24-hour period.
Fortunately, today showers are expected to clear in Perth and Adelaide, with both cities reaching a high of 22 degrees. Meanwhile, Melbourne, Canberra, and Hobart are expected to reach a maximum temperature of 17, while Brisbane will see a shower or two with a top of 24 degrees. In contrast, it will be sunny and warm in Darwin, with the temperature reaching a scorching 35 degrees.
So, it looks like a very wet weekend is ahead for most of New South Wales, but the good news is that things should start to dry up next week. Stay safe and stay dry, folks!
