Arnold Schwarzenegger has opened up about his parenting techniques, which he admits were slightly terrifying. The 76-year-old Terminator actor is dad to five kids - Katherine, Christopher, Patrick and Christina with ex-wife Maria Shriver, and son Joseph Baena with his former housekeeper, Mildred.
In a recent interview ahead of the release of his new book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life, Arnold discussed how he tried to pass along his wisdom to his kids. He told People Magazine that although his children have humorous stories about their upbringing, he always strived to instill a strong work ethic.
Arnold revealed that when his daughter Katherine left her shoes in front of the fireplace twice, he burned them to teach her a lesson. “Yes, absolutely,” he ‘grinned’ when asked if he actually set her shoes on fire. “Now [she] uses the same methods which she cried over and that she complained about.”
Although Arnold insisted that he wasn’t a ‘drill instructor’, he wanted to ensure that his children understood the importance of doing chores and taking responsibility. He shared that he had grown up with very little himself, and so instilled the values of hard work in his household.
However, Arnold went a little too far in some cases. For example, when his son Patrick failed to make his bed, his dad threw his mattress out onto the balcony. Arnold explained that he wanted to teach him not to rely on anyone to clean up after him.
