Martinique Lewis, the host of National Geographic’s Black Travel Across America, recently launched a revolutionary app to help connect Black travelers. The ABC Travel GreenBook was released on June 2nd and is based on Victor Hugo Green’s The Negro Motorist Greenbook.
The app contains a comprehensive database of Black businesses, events, and communities in popular vacation spots across six continents. It also has a unique rating system which allows real people who have visited the places to provide useful information. This system ensures that users can access information on places that are not usually advertised.
Lewis explained her enthusiasm for the app’s features to Travel Noire. “I love the recommend a business feature. Since the app was released, users have been wearing it out. With over 20,000 listings worldwide, there are plenty of Black travel businesses that we missed, like Sabor Cubano in Florence, Italy. But because of users, it’s now included in the app!”
The homepage of the app also provides travelers with Black itineraries, as well as information on upcoming Black events around the world and recommendations on Black-owned businesses. Lewis encourages users to “support these businesses by leaving a review after you visited so people know it was awesome.” She also encourages non-Black travelers to use the app to amplify Black-owned businesses.
The response to the ABC Travel GreenBook has been overwhelmingly positive. Lewis says she had a goal of 2,000 downloads and 1,000 subscribers, but they’ve already exceeded that in less than two weeks. She expresses her gratitude for the support and encourages users to continue providing feedback.
