Animated series based on 'Hair Love', a popular short film, is coming to the small screen.
The beloved animated short "Hair Love" is getting a new chapter. Matthew A. Cherry, the creator of the film, is launching a new animated television series called "Young Love" that will feature the same characters from the Oscar-winning film.

The series trailer was released on September 13th, 2023, and the first season will consist of twelve episodes. These episodes will be available on the streaming platform Max starting September 21st.

"Hair Love" was released in 2019 and it tells the story of a Black father who is doing his daughter's hair before visiting her mother in the hospital. The short film was met with much acclaim and even earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

"Young Love," which takes place two months after the short film leaves off, is set in Chicago, Matthew Cherry's hometown. Issa Rae and Kid Cudi will be lending their voices as the parents of Zuri, the protagonist. Brooke Monroe Conaway, a young actress from Baltimore, will be voicing the role of Zuri.

In an interview with news outlets, Cherry spoke about the purpose of this new project and how it highlights modern-day Black families. He said, "The thing I think is really unique about our show is that it’s centered around Black millennial parents. Typically, in animated shows, the parents are more boomer, more established in their careers, and the idea of exploring millennial parents was cool because they haven’t really achieved their dreams yet. They’re still working toward their goals, but they want to be present in their kid’s life."

The cast also includes Loretta Devine and Harry Lennix, who play the parents of Angela Young, the natural hair stylist and vlogger. This intergenerational conversation will be available to viewers when the show premieres.

The success of the original "Hair Love" short film has brought a lot of attention to this new series. With the release of the trailer and the upcoming debut of "Young Love," it's clear that this universe is expanding and we cannot wait to see what Matthew Cherry and his team have in store.
