Andy Townsend still has doubts about Chelsea forward Kai Havertz

Andy Townsend has shared his uncertainty regarding Chelsea forward Kai Havertz after his move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. The Germany international has netted 29 times for the Blues, including the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City, however he has yet to find a permanent position on the pitch, having been deployed on the wings and up front.

Chelsea have been uncharacteristically low-scoring this season, with just 23 goals in 23 Premier League games, 15 fewer than relegation-battlers Leeds United, and 37 less than defending champions Manchester City. Havertz is the London side's top goalscorer despite only netting five times himself, and Townsend has articulated his reservations over the 23-year-old.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Blues midfielder said: ‘In the final stages, things have to improve significantly. Thomas Tuchel had difficulty getting Timo Werner firing and trying to get the best out of Kai Havertz was difficult. I still have major doubts about him, I don’t really see him being the 'real deal'. Chelsea have to be better and create more chances, I don’t see the fans on the edge of their seats expecting goals.’
