This has been a tough week for the Xbox community. A lot of people are feeling upset and disappointed with the recent news coming out of Microsoft's gaming division. And I have to say, I can't blame them. As a reader myself, I can't help but feel angry at the recent layoffs and changes happening at Xbox. It feels like a betrayal from the very people who are supposed to be looking out for both their fans and their employees.
Where do I even begin with this week's Xbox news? It's hard to put into words the frustration and disappointment I feel. And to be honest, if Phil Spencer or any of the other executives dare to appear in another showcase or livestream, I don't think I'll be able to contain my anger. But then again, I'm not sure I'd even watch it. I'm just done with Xbox at this point. And while I may be too invested in their ecosystem to completely cut ties, I'll certainly be limiting how much of my hard-earned money I give to them.
I still remember when I used to dream of becoming a game developer. But the way things are now, I don't think there's a less stable or less respected job in the world. It's a shame, really. While other companies treat their developers like pampered kings, Microsoft seems to see them as nothing more than human sacrifices to please their investors. And it's not like they're struggling financially either. They're the richest company in the world!
But what's even worse is the impact this will have on the games themselves. With fewer developers and more reliance on AI, the quality of Xbox games will surely suffer. Studios are being shut down, games are being cancelled, and it's only the beginning. It's clear that Microsoft's main focus now is to make as much profit as possible, even if it means sacrificing the very people who make their games.
And let's not forget the blatant lies they've told us about their multiformat plans. They'll claim that their plans have changed, but the truth is, they knew all along that some games would never go multiformat. Gears Of War, Halo, and Starfield are just a few examples. It's all part of their strategy to seem like they're supporting all platforms, but in reality, they're slowly phasing out exclusives. And as any gamer knows, without exclusives, you can't have a successful console.
I'm not saying this out of some petty console war jealousy. It's just a fact. And it's clear that Microsoft was in denial about this. They thought that Game Pass alone could be their "exclusive," but that obviously hasn't worked out. And by making everything multiformat, they've lost the very thing that made them stand out as a gaming company. Sure, they may be the biggest publisher in the West, but who ever had any loyalty to Activision? And now, Xbox has taken their place.
I used to be a proud "Xbot" fan during the Xbox 360 era. I loved how Microsoft was pushing the boundaries and challenging the more traditional PlayStation. But now, I see that it was all just a facade. The real Xbox has been unmasked, and it's not pretty. It's become a giant corporation that only cares about its bottom line, not its customers or the gaming community. And sadly, I don't see things getting any better with Phil Spencer at the helm. It seems like Xbox will only continue to become more bitter and petty, trying to undermine its competitors and taking advantage of technologies like AI and streaming that they have control over.
You may think I'm overreacting, but I feel betrayed. And I'm sure the developers who have lost their jobs feel the same way. It's clear that Xbox no longer cares about its fans or the gaming industry. They only care about making money. And I fear that they will soon have a lot less of both. It's a sad reality, but one that we have to face. As a loyal fan, I can only hope that Xbox will one day return to its roots and remember what made them special in the first place. But for now, I'll be looking elsewhere for my gaming needs.
