It's hard to believe, but despite being an iconic star of the 80s, Cyndi Lauper never thought about making a documentary about her life. However, at the age of 70, she recently announced that she will be embarking on a farewell tour this year, covering 23 cities. But the decision to make a documentary was not an easy one for Cyndi. In fact, she was quite reluctant at first.
During an appearance on The One Show, Alex Jones asked Cyndi about her hesitation to do a documentary about her life. To which she replied, "Well, I'm not dead." Everyone around her burst into laughter, and Cyndi continued, "I just felt like, I don't think so! And then they said, well, if you're alive, then you can tell them what's wrong. You know, fact-check." But eventually, she did agree to make the documentary, and it will be released on Paramount Plus this month.
Cyndi rose to fame in the 80s with hits like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," but she joked on The One Show that she's "not dead" yet. She also shared that she will be going on a huge tour this year, adding, "It's a documentary, but not an auto-documentary. It's actually done by this wonderful filmmaker, Alison Ellwood." She explained that she watched one of Alison's documentaries during lockdown and loved her style, so she wanted to work with a real filmmaker.
Cyndi's approach to the documentary was very hands-off, except for providing family pictures and videos. She found this experience to be particularly moving, as she discovered footage of her mother who had recently passed away and pictures of her family that she had no idea existed. "Honestly, when I watched it, there were pictures of my family that I didn't even know that I had," Cyndi shared.
The documentary also inspired Cyndi to go on tour once more, which she has deemed as her "farewell" tour. This will be her first prolonged stint on the road in over a decade, since her last headline tour in 2013. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun tour will also mark her first headline performance at New York's Madison Square Garden. With a career spanning over four decades, Cyndi has won a Tony Award for composing the musical Kinky Boots and two Grammys. She also has an Emmy award for her performance in Mad About You in 1995, just one accolade shy of the esteemed EGOT title.
Before embarking on her farewell tour around the US, Cyndi will also be performing at Glastonbury.
