Amy Dowden has big plans for the new year. After missing out on this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing due to her breast cancer diagnosis, mastectomy, and chemotherapy treatment, the professional dancer is determined to take part in the competition next year.
Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Amy expressed her hopes of winning the Glitterball Trophy in 2024 and becoming the first Welsh pro to do so. She said: ‘After having a mastectomy, chemotherapy, fertility treatment, the lot, I am now finally looking ahead to 2024 and I’ve just got a good feeling it’s going to be my year and hopefully, I’m going to get that Glitterball and I’m going to bring it back to Wales because a Welsh professional dancer’s never won the show.’
Amy is no stranger to the Strictly ballroom, having competed in 2019 with CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual, and in 2020 and 2021 with former Royal Marines Commando JJ Chalmers and McFly musician Tom Fletcher, respectively. She and Karim made it to the final of the competition in 2019, which resulted in them finishing as runners-up.
Ahead of the New Year, the 33-year-old also shared a powerful message on her Instagram Story for her followers. She wrote: ‘Last day of 2023! I’m sure I’m not the only one but actually finding it hard looking at others post of the past year. I’m sure I’m not alone and that’s why I wanted to put something. I feel I was robed [sic] of the year I had planned and reflecting for me makes me upset and angry but later I’m going to make myself look through my camera roll and remember all the good times, the amazing opportunities I had, family time but also taking time to realise I learnt the most this year.’
Amy concluded her post with a reminder to check for breast cancer symptoms and a call for her followers to send love and hugs to those that need it.
We can't wait to see Amy back on Strictly Come Dancing and wish her the best of luck for the upcoming season. Let's hope she will be able to make her dream of lifting the Glitterball Trophy come true in 2024!
