Americans recount their traumatic experiences of being kidnapped by the Mexican cartel, sharing the horrific details of their encounters.
LaTavia Washington McGee and Eric Williams recently shared their story with Anderson Cooper from CNN to spread awareness of their traumatic experience. Earlier this year, the four friends were kidnapped by a Mexican cartel in broad daylight while traveling for a medical appointment in Matamoros. Sadly, two of the friends, Shaeed Woodard and Zindell Brown, were killed. Williams remembered driving and then hearing a car horn behind them, and Brown warning them not to stop the car. Washington McGee said, “They didn’t deserve that. None of us deserved it. But we’re alive – we have a lot of recovering to do.”

After they were dragged onto a pickup truck, they were interrogated, and the cartel members tried to force the two to have sex—even though they are siblings. Williams was shot in both legs and the crew attempted to treat him, stitching it up while his leg was propped up on a two-by-four. Washington McGee had a final encounter with Brown, who was fighting for his life. She said, “I just told him I’m sorry because I asked him to come with me. He was like, 'It’s OK. I’m your brother; I’m supposed to be there for you. I love you.’”

Fortunately, since the horrific incident, the cartel has sent a letter to authorities apologizing for their violent actions. LaTavia and Eric's bravery in speaking out has allowed them to take their power back, and their story is one of hope and resilience.
