Akshay Kumar on playing real-life heroes: films may create change.
Akshay Kumar’s Mission Raniganj: the Great Bharat Rescue is now out in theatres, but the film directed by Tinu Suresh Desai has not had the warmest of receptions. On the day of the film's release, Akshay held a group conversation, which The Free Press Journal was also invited to. During the conversation, Akshay spoke about how he prepared for the movie, as well as other topics.

When asked how he prepared for the film, Akshay explained that it was the job of the writer and director to come prepared before embarking onto the sets. He said that when they found out about the unsung hero Sardar Jaswant Singh Gill, they met him and attempted to incorporate the mannerisms and other important aspects that were part of his characteristics. He also stated that the Gill family has watched the film and liked it.

Akshay was also asked whether real stories reach more audiences. He conceded that real stories have a niche audience, but hoped and wished that a lot of people would watch it. He then explained why he chooses to do issue-based stories, saying that he feels nice to play stories that relate with the audiences. He then went on to describe why he was attracted to the character in the movie, Sardar Jaswant Singh Gill, who was aware that 67 miners were stuck in the mines, but still went down himself last, without worrying about his own life.

When asked whether Mission Raniganj should be made tax-free, Akshay said that it was up to the producer to decide, and that the state government may also have a say in the matter. He then added that his last film OMG2 was an educational film about sex education, which was very important for society, and so the state government should take a stand and make a decision.
