In New Delhi, it has been reported that more than 70 flights have been cancelled on Thursday due to the mass sick leave taken by Air India Express' cabin crew. Sources have disclosed that out of a total of 292 flights scheduled for today, 74 have been cancelled according to information provided by IANS.
This disruption is a result of the airline's cabin crew taking a stand and calling in sick, citing the airline's failure to fulfill their promises of job security, salary preservation, and recognition of seniority and expertise. The Air India Express Employees Union, which represents a portion of the cabin crew, had previously expressed their concerns to Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, addressing employee grievances and highlighting the issues within Air India Express Limited since its acquisition by Tata.
The union has accused the airline of mismanagement and unequal treatment of staff, which has had a negative impact on employee morale. However, Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh has written a letter to his colleagues, stating that the actions of a few do not represent the majority of the 2,000 cabin crew members who continue to serve the airline's guests with dedication and pride.
In his letter sent on Wednesday, Singh explained that over 100 cabin crew colleagues had reported sick just before their scheduled flight duties, causing severe disruptions to the airline's operations. This was especially impactful as most of the affected colleagues held L1 roles, resulting in a disproportionate impact on over 90 flights.
The situation in Air India Express is currently tense, with both the cabin crew and the management at odds. As passengers face the consequences of cancelled flights, the airline must work towards resolving the issues at hand and ensuring that its employees are treated fairly and with respect.
