AIMJ leader expresses discontent among Muslims over PM Modi's comments on UCC.
In a recent speech on Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi passionately advocated for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, the President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, however, expressed discontent with the Prime Minister's remarks, stating that the Muslim community in India is not in agreement with his views.

During his address from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of fulfilling the vision of the framers of our Constitution by implementing a Unified Civil Code. He also pointed out that the Supreme Court has called for this issue to be addressed. The Prime Minister stated, “The spirit of the Constitution and the need of the hour demand that we openly discuss this crucial matter. Everyone should share their opinions. Laws that create division based on religion and promote discrimination have no place in a modern society.”

In response to the Prime Minister's words, Razvi expressed, “In his speech from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi talked about implementing the Uniform Civil Code. However, the entire Muslim community in India is not satisfied with his statement.” He further explained, “Every society and religion have their own principles for living, which cannot be encompassed in a Uniform Civil Code. This is why 'One nation, One election' is not feasible in our country. If the UCC is enforced, it could potentially lead to fragmentation within our society, disrupting the harmony among people of all religions who live together in brotherhood.”

Razvi urged the Prime Minister not to make the mistake of implementing the Uniform Civil Code. In his speech, the Prime Minister also acknowledged the frequent discussions on the matter in the Supreme Court and the need for a secular civil code in the country. He stated, “The Supreme Court has deliberated on the Uniform Civil Code numerous times in our country. It has issued multiple orders, reflecting the widespread belief that our current civil code is discriminatory and communal in nature. It is imperative that we establish a secular civil code in the country in order to eliminate discrimination based on religion.”

The Uniform Civil Code proposes a common set of laws to govern all citizens, replacing the personal laws that are specific to different religions. These personal laws cover various areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance.
