On my recent visit to an art exhibition, I found myself drawn to a stunning piece at the far end of the gallery. As I moved closer, I realized that it was a huge golden seascape, measuring 12 meters by 3 meters. But, I was even more astonished to find out that it was made of 500,000 individual fish hooks! This creative use of an ordinary object had produced an extraordinary piece of art.
The production of this piece took around 6 months of work, with the help of 30 assistants, who worked in shifts. It was created by the artist Yoan Capote and is a testament to the power of both ideas and production. As Cambridge dictionary says, “Creativity is the ability to produce or use original and unusual ideas”. An idea is just a thought, and it doesn’t make a difference until it’s turned into a production. It is only then that the invisible becomes visible.
The challenge of creativity in a world of AI and ChatGPT is the “stochastic parrot”. This is a large language model that can generate convincing language but does not actually understand the meaning. It is trained with an extensive universe of text data which it learns the statistical patterns and relationships from. This means that it is limited to the examples it was trained on and does not produce original ideas.
This in turn leads to the challenge of originality. As emerging humans, we are all conditioned by our parents, culture, and religion. Society and our peers demand that we fit in, and so our brains often produce thoughts that are in other people’s voices. We need to break free from this calcified training and conditioning of our lived-in environment in order to create something unique.
Luckily, in the age of the internet, we are now in a world of superconsciousness. Technology has amplified the world’s intelligence and creativity, and AI can take the learnings and information from a global consciousness to create new combinations in seconds. AI can enhance, amplify, and accelerate our creativity by connecting individual human consciousness and intelligence globally at scale.
In order to nurture creativity, we need to recognize our innate creativity and take the time to break free from the mold that holds us in place and traps us in fixed thinking. We need to use AI for the common good and beauty, and use the connections and intelligence of the human race to create something unique.
On a recent visit to an art exhibition, I was captivated by a vast golden seascape at the far end of the gallery. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it was composed of 500,000 fish hooks, a creative and extraordinary use of an ordinary object. It must have been 12 meters by 3 meters in size and took around 6 months to produce with 30 assistants helping in different sessions of work.
The artist of this magnificent piece was Yoan Capote, and it brings to light the importance of both ‘idea’ and ‘production’ in creativity. Ideas are just thoughts, invisible, and can make no difference. However, production is when the invisible is made visible. This is what brings about true change in the world, and both are needed for creativity.
It is not enough to just dream, action needs to be taken to bring about real change. In a world of AI and ChatGPT, it is important to understand the term ‘stochastic parrot’, which is a large language model used in machine learning. It is good at generating convincing language but does not actually understand the meaning.
The challenge of creativity in a world of AI and ChatGPT is that our individual creativity is often constrained by our parents, culture, and religion. We are all conditioned to fit in and this stifles our potential. We need to be able to break free from the ‘mold’ that holds us in place and traps us in fixed thinking in order to reach our best potential and create something original.
The internet has enabled the connection of individual human consciousness and intelligence globally at scale, and AI has enabled the world’s intelligence and creativity to be amplified by technology. AI can take the data and learnings from a global consciousness and create new combinations that are done in seconds. This is human creativity enhanced by the machine, and it is the human race’s collective unconscious that is now public and conscious.
It is up to us to nurture creativity and break free from the constraints that prevent us from reaching our full potential. We need to have the courage to make original ideas and produce something unique, and use AI for the common good. Beauty, connections, and intelligence at a global scale is now possible, and by doing so we can bring about real change in the world.
