People are showing support for a Black teen in Missouri who was hurt in an alleged hate crime.

Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old high school student, has been recovering from his injuries after he was shot multiple times in an unfortunate incident at the wrong address. Wanda Cooper-Jones, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery who was tragically murdered while jogging in a Georgia neighborhood, has requested a meeting with Yarl's family to lend support. In addition, the White House has also invited Yarl for an in-person visit.
The Kansas City, Missouri community responded by staging a protest outside of the shooter’s home to demand justice, while Ben Crump, lawyer representing the family, called for the homeowner to be arrested and charged with the attempted murder of the teen. The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office has since filed charges against the 84-year-old homeowner responsible for the shooting.
The incident has encouraged a positive change, as Missouri’s self-defense laws have been heavily criticized. Missouri state Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern, a white Democrat, explained the situation to her adopted 9-year-old son, who is Black, and shared that “we have a young boy who is fighting for his life because of what we have perpetuated by our lax gun laws.”
