After many years of working together, midwives discover something surprising.
Sharon and Katie had been working together as midwives at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, Wales for six years before discovering a meaningful connection between them. It wasn't until Katie became pregnant herself that they realized their shared past. As they were looking through old photos of the day she was born, Katie noticed a familiar face holding her as a newborn baby - it was Sharon.

Katie, now 29 years old, had always admired and learned so much from Sharon during their time working together. But now, learning that Sharon was the one who delivered her at the hospital in 1995, their bond grew even stronger. "I had worked with Sharon for so long, learning so much from her," Katie said. "All the while, we didn't know our special past. Now we've found this out, it means so much to both of us."

Initially, Katie studied law but always had a passion for caring for others. That's why she decided to retrain as a midwife and has been working at Singleton Hospital since 2016. When she became pregnant with her son Luca in 2023, her family was going through old photos and came across the one with Sharon holding her as a newborn. "I immediately knew who that was. Straight away I knew it was Sharon," Katie said.

Sharon, who recently retired after almost 49 years of service, was just as surprised to learn about their connection. She had a box of keepsakes from the women she had helped deliver over the years and remembered the day Katie was born vividly. "As soon as I saw the photograph, I instantly recognised it and pulled out my copy," she said. "I was very surprised to learn this after working together for so long. It's not every day that you come across someone who pursued the same career as you, and that you were there when they were born."

Sharon's career in the NHS started at the young age of 17 in 1975. She went on to become a student midwife in 1984 and qualified two years later. She dedicated her life to helping and caring for others, working as a midwife in the Swansea Bay area until her retirement in 2024. It's a career that Katie now shares as well, as she has become a midwife sonographer.

Their special connection has only strengthened their bond and has brought them even closer together. "I learned so much from Sharon, she is such an icon," Katie said. "If you want to know something or needed help on the ward, she was the person to go to. Everything is in line, and she does everything by the book." Even Katie's mother, Sally, had sent Sharon a copy of the photo after her birth, showcasing the special moment they shared together.

It's not every day that you come across someone who played such a significant role in your life, and then years later, you end up working together and sharing the same passion. Sharon and Katie's story is a heartwarming reminder of the special connections and bonds that can be formed through our life's journey.
