After his impressive feat of running 10,000 miles across Africa in just 365 days, the fearless adventurer Russ Cook is now gearing up for his next jaw-dropping challenge. And this time, he's set his sights on the stunning landscapes of New Zealand. But before he embarks on this grueling journey, he took some time to recover and indulge in some tasty sausage rolls to celebrate his previous victory.
But make no mistake, Russ is now in top shape and ready to take on a challenge that even surpasses Mount Everest. He will be running the entire length of Aotearoa New Zealand, covering a distance of over 60 ultramarathons. His route will follow the Te Araroa trail, known for its diverse terrain and breathtaking views. In fact, the elevation gain on this trail is even higher than Mount Everest – a true test of physical endurance.
Upon his return from Africa, Russ admits that it took some time to readjust. But now, he feels sharper than ever and is eager to explore the beauty of New Zealand on foot. "It's always been a dream of mine to visit this country, and what better way to do it than by running through it," says Russ. "New Zealand has some incredible things to offer, and I can't wait to experience it all."
Of course, Russ is well aware of the challenges that await him on this journey. The high altitude and steep inclines will put a strain on his body, but he's determined to push through. "The cardio will be tougher, and the inclines will be harder on the legs," Russ explains. But he's not one to back down from a challenge.
Starting in March, Russ will begin his epic run from Bluff, the southernmost tip of New Zealand's South Island. From there, he will make his way northbound, eventually reaching Cape Rēinga, the northernmost point of the North Island. The entire journey will cover a distance of over 3000km and will take Russ through a variety of terrain, from rivers and mountains to beaches.
Russ is no stranger to facing challenges and overcoming obstacles. In fact, he's had his fair share of hurdles in the past. During his time in Africa, he and his team were victims of an armed robbery, losing thousands of pounds worth of belongings. But Russ is not one to dwell on the negative. Instead, he wants to use his experiences to inspire and empower others to push their limits and chase their dreams.
"I want to show people that there are no limits to what we can achieve," says Russ. "I'm hoping to inspire others to get moving and go after their own adventures." And with the support of New Zealand's tourist organization, 100% Pure New Zealand, Russ will even have the opportunity to bungee jump off the Auckland Harbour Bridge – a fitting finale to his incredible journey.
