Actor says being on Coronation Street made him feel restricted, but he's excited for his new role.
Maximus Evans, known for his portrayal of Corey Brent on Coronation Street, recently made the decision to leave the show in 2021. Arriving in 2019, his character quickly took on a central role in a devastating storyline involving a gang attack on Seb Franklin and Nina, solely because of their appearance. The attack resulted in Seb's death and Nina experiencing memory loss due to the trauma. Eventually, with the help of a homeless man named Stu Carpenter, Corey's involvement in the attack was exposed and he was arrested and charged.

The soap worked closely with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, an organization set up in honor of a young woman who was killed in a similar attack in 2007. After his departure from Coronation Street, Maximus decided to return to education and attend drama school. Now, three years later, he is preparing for his debut in a theater production of the novel Never Let Me Go.

In a recent interview, Maximus reflected on his time on Corrie and why he chose to pursue other avenues in the industry. "The truth is, I didn't want to be tied down. Not just to the character, but to one form of acting," he explained. "I loved my time at Corrie but I knew that it was limited. Acting has always been a passion of mine since I was a child and going to drama school allowed me to explore different characters and styles."

He also spoke about the intensity of his time on the show and how drama school helped him to settle and hone his craft. "I met some fantastic people and for me, my passion has always been in theatre," he shared. "It's important to not be cornered into one style and to be open to exploring different styles, which is what drama school has done for me."

Maximus also discussed his upcoming role in the theatre production of Never Let Me Go, a dystopian story about three friends who grew up in an enclosed environment where their only purpose is to donate organs. He revealed that his character, Philip, was not in the original novel but was added in the adaptation as a fellow donor. "It's a love story, it's funny, but there's also a real sense of tragedy," he said. "I think it's a really important story and it's the first time it's been adapted on stage in England, which is huge."

Reflecting on his time at drama school, Maximus admitted that it took him some time to adjust after playing such a dark character on Corrie. "It took me a while to loosen up because you have to allow yourself to be callable and be loose and agile going from character to character," he shared. "But with the help of my peers and the amazing staff, I was able to become myself, which was really important to me."

When asked if he would consider returning to Coronation Street, Maximus said, "It's not on the forefront of my mind at the moment. I want to explore different paths in the industry." However, he did leave the door open for a possible future return, saying, "You never know, he might get an early release."
