Actor from Netflix and soap opera speaks out about eating disorder following major television role in hopes of bringing attention to the issue.
Angus Castle-Doughty, known for his role as Eric Foster on the popular soap opera Hollyoaks, has recently opened up about his struggles with male muscle dysmorphia and his plans to raise awareness for this often overlooked issue. It all began in 2019 when Angus landed a role in the major Netflix fantasy drama Shadow and Bone, which he describes as the biggest role of his career. However, this opportunity came with a price as Angus found himself falling into extreme dieting and over-exercising in order to achieve the perfect body for his character.

It wasn't until he spoke to charities and experts that Angus realized he had developed body and muscle dysmorphia. With this newfound understanding, he felt a responsibility to use his platform to shed light on this issue that affects countless men worldwide. And thus, he came up with the idea for his new project, Dis-Morph-ick.

"I wrote Dis-Morph-ick based on my own experiences with muscle dysmorphia and disordered eating," Angus shared. "My work as an actor and my attempts to perfect my body fundamentally changed my relationship with food and exercise, and I continue to manage these challenges today."

Dis-Morph-ick, a short-film written by Angus himself, follows the story of a young man named George who develops an exercise addiction and disordered eating. Through this film, Angus hopes to reach out to others who may be experiencing similar struggles and bring attention to the growing epidemic of male eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia. He believes that there is not enough being done to combat this issue and wants to use the accessibility of an entertaining film to spark a conversation and raise awareness.

To make Dis-Morph-ick a reality, Angus has started a crowdfunding campaign and is asking for support from the community. He knows that putting his personal experiences on film is a vulnerable exercise, but he is willing to do so in the hopes of reaching a generation of men who may be silently suffering or even unaware that their struggles are a recognized problem.

Angus, now 29 years old, is best known for his chillingly good performance as Eric Foster on Hollyoaks. His portrayal of the radical misogynist who terrorized the women of the village and groomed Mason Chen-Williams received critical acclaim. He also played the character of Mikhael in Shadow and Bone, which unfortunately was cancelled by Netflix after only two seasons, leaving fans heartbroken that they wouldn't get to see the story come to a proper conclusion.
