Around 40 students were being driven back from their educational visit to the French Alps when the coach they were traveling in tumbled down a woody hillside and landed in a stream, leaving both the driver and their companion with grievous injuries.

Eighteen of the children and one other adult needed treatment for minor injuries, reported the mayor of Corps, Fabien Mulyk, who added that all the youngsters were 'stable'.

An enquiry by the local prosecutor has been launched to look into the accident. Mulyk indicated that the most likely explanation was that the driver had a health issue while driving.

Local administrators told French media that the weather did not appear to be a factor, with no ice or snow on the stretch of road where the incident occurred. In addition, all the children on the bus had their seatbelts on.

A picture circulated online showed the bus perched on the edge of a ravine, its windshield smashed and surrounded by a pile of dead branches.
