A retired bank manager from Bhopal, Dayaram Deshmukh, found himself in a nightmare after being targeted by cyber criminals. Posing as Bhopal police officials, these fraudsters managed to swindle a staggering amount of Rs 68 lakh from Deshmukh, all while threatening him with a false fraud case worth Rs 4 crore. It was only after he realized he had been cheated that Deshmukh approached the State Cyber Cell for help. The police are currently investigating the case.
According to Deshmukh's account in his complaint, the ordeal began when he received a call from an unknown number on Monday. The person on the other end claimed to be a Bhopal police officer and accused Deshmukh of being involved in a massive fraud during his time as a bank manager. The fraudster went on to threaten Deshmukh with arrest and warned him that his family members could also be dragged into the matter.
Feeling shaken and unsure of what to do, Deshmukh confided in his wife and they discussed the situation. The fraudsters, taking advantage of his fear, assured him that he could avoid arrest if he cooperated with them. They then instructed him to isolate himself in a room, claiming it was a part of a "digital arrest" process. Deshmukh was then asked to download an app called Signal on his phone and a video call interrogation began. The person interrogating him was dressed in a police uniform and the room they were in looked official.
Under immense pressure and fear, Deshmukh was directed to transfer a "security amount" to avoid arrest. Believing that he had no other option, Deshmukh and his wife visited their bank the next day and liquidated five fixed deposits, transferring a total of Rs 68 lakh to the accounts provided by the scammers. He was then warned not to inform anyone until the fake investigation was completed.
It wasn't until Deshmukh's son found out about the incident and took his father to the State Cyber Office that the truth came out. A formal complaint was registered on Thursday, and the police are now working to catch the fraudsters and bring them to justice. This serves as a reminder to always be cautious and vigilant when dealing with unknown callers, especially when they claim to be authorities.
