Are you still holding onto your previous generation console? As a passionate video game fan, I completely understand the confusion and frustration that comes with recent news in the industry. Despite playing some incredible games like Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Unicorn Overlord, it seems like the headlines are constantly filled with bad news - from layoffs to the rise of live service games and an overall feeling of doom and gloom. While I know there are valid reasons for concern, it can be disheartening when all you want to do is enjoy a few hours of harmless fun.
I can't say for sure if Sony's recent lackluster showcases are contributing to this negativity, but they certainly aren't helping to boost morale or build excitement for the future. However, despite all of this, I have been content with the games I am currently playing. My collection is a mix of new releases, old favorites, and titles from my backlog that I am finally getting around to. In fact, I probably have enough games to last me a lifetime. So why am I not planning on buying a PlayStation 5 or any other next-gen console?
There are a few reasons for this, and they may not all seem related. However, as I write this, I am hoping to make sense of it all for myself. The first, and most obvious, factor is the cost. In today's world where everything seems to be getting more expensive, a PlayStation 5 is a significant investment - especially when you factor in the higher price of games as well. It's no surprise that sales are starting to decline sooner than expected, as many hardcore gamers have already made the purchase and with the rising cost of living, more casual players may not feel the urge to spend so much money.
But it's not just the expense that is making me hesitant to upgrade. The lack of new game announcements also plays a part, although it's not the main reason. As a new dad, my time for gaming has significantly decreased. While this may not be ideal, I'm sure it's a common situation for anyone who is no longer in their 20s or below. And let's be honest, even if there were more game releases, I probably wouldn't have much time to play them.
But the main reason I am not planning on buying a PlayStation 5 is that it simply doesn't feel worth it. I could probably afford it and make time for it, but the lack of games and the mistreatment of developers has drained my enthusiasm for gaming as a whole. It takes a lot of effort for me to fit gaming into my life now, and I am just not sure it's worth it anymore. The only scenario where I would consider buying a new console is if Sony released a portable device that was fully backwards compatible.
It's not always one big event that makes you fall out of love with something - it's often a combination of smaller issues. And at this point, I have had enough of the console drama. Don't get me wrong, I still love video games. But being a gamer nowadays comes with its fair share of problems, and I just don't know if I want to deal with it anymore. Maybe I will just wait and save my money for a PlayStation 6 instead.
I want to make it clear that these are my personal thoughts and opinions, and they do not necessarily reflect those of GameCentral or Metro. However, I do believe that it's important to have open and honest conversations about the gaming industry and the challenges that come with it.
