A quarter of Indians encountered fake political content, according to a report.
A recent report has revealed that nearly one in four Indians have encountered deepfake content, only to discover its falsity later on. The cyber security company McAfee conducted a survey of 7,000 individuals from various countries, including India, and found that 75% of Indians have been exposed to deepfakes. What's more concerning is that most of them are worried about the potential use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating these deceptive videos to impersonate public figures, erode trust in media, and even manipulate elections.

With the increasing number of deepfake cases involving both public and private figures, Pratim Mukherjee, senior director of engineering at McAfee, expressed his concerns about the authenticity of content, especially during an important election year. He emphasized the ease with which AI can manipulate voices and visuals, raising critical questions about the credibility of online content.

Among the various potential uses of deepfakes that are worrisome, the report found instances of cyberbullying, creating fake pornographic content, facilitating scams, and even distorting historical facts. In fact, a staggering 64% of the respondents admitted that AI has made it more challenging for them to identify online scams. Additionally, 57% of them have come across a video, image, or recording of a celebrity and believed it to be real, with 31% falling victim to a scam.

Mukherjee emphasized the need for consumers to be cautious and proactive in safeguarding themselves against misinformation, disinformation, and deepfake scams. With the rise of AI technology and its potential for deception, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed and vigilant about the content they consume online. In a world where deepfakes are becoming increasingly prevalent, it is essential to question the authenticity of what we see and hear, and take necessary precautions to protect ourselves against their harmful effects.
