On May 13, Dontay Akeem Prophet, a principal in Florida, was arrested for allegedly abusing and falsely imprisoning a child under the age of 13. According to The Ocala Gazette, the incident took place on May 9 at Destiny Leadership Academy in Ocala, Florida. The school's secretary, upon witnessing the incident, immediately informed its owner, Pastor Lillie Tuggerson. Tuggerson then reached out to the Marion County Sheriff's Office for further assistance.
When Deputy Ronald Bailey arrived at the school, he was shown over an hour-long surveillance footage by the secretary. In the video, Prophet can be seen placing a male student in a chokehold, grabbing and holding him down on the floor. The MSCO stated in a press release, "Prophet can be seen on camera using a charging cable to strike the child, causing the child to fall and sustain injuries. Additionally, Prophet twisted the child's ankle, slapped the child in the face, and subjected him to further physical abuse."
According to the arrest report, a teacher also witnessed Prophet attacking the child, slamming him on the floor and then leaving the room. Prophet, on the other hand, claimed that he acted in such a way because the child had made suicidal statements. When asked about why he got on top of the student, Prophet stated that he was afraid the victim would run out of the school and into traffic.
Shortly after the incident, the unidentified victim asked his mother if Prophet had contacted her about what had happened. The mother also informed the police that her son was behaving unusually. In addition, Fox 35 reported that the MSCO had released body cam footage of Prophet's arrest, where he appeared to be surprised to find out that there was a camera inside the classroom. Prophet has denied harming the student.
Further investigation revealed that Prophet had faced allegations of child molestation in 2017. However, one of the charges was dropped by a prosecutor, resulting in no conviction. Destiny Leadership Academy has released a statement announcing that they have terminated Prophet's employment. He is currently being held in the Marion County Jail without bond and his next court date is scheduled for June 11.
