The life of University of Virginia football player Lavel Davis, Jr. is being honored in a major way. ABC 4 reports that a portion of Highway 78 in Dorchester County, South Carolina, will be named after him, with signs reading "LAVEL 'TYLER' NORMAN DAVIS, JR. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" placed at the 12.79 to 22.39 mile markers.
Davis Jr. was one of three football players from the school who were tragically killed in a campus shooting last November, with two of his teammates, Devin Candler and D'Sean Perry, also losing their lives and a fourth, Mike Hollins Jr., being injured.
A proposal to recognize Davis Jr. was submitted to the South Carolina General Assembly in February, stating that it would be "fitting and proper to pay homage to Lavel 'Tyler' Norman Davis, Jr., an outstanding athlete and accomplished young man whose life held such promise."
The renaming ceremony was announced by Sean Lampkin, Davis Jr.'s cousin, via Twitter. He wrote that Lavel's mother, Simone, had informed him of the State of SC's decision to honor her son.
