Today, a man faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court for the first time, charged with the murder of a 62-year-old man. The accused, John Sheffield, 55, was visibly emotional as he appeared in court. It is alleged that on Monday night, Sheffield fatally assaulted Kenneth Magee at a home in Werribee, in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
According to reports, Magee was found with life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he sadly passed away a few hours later. Sheffield was arrested at the scene by Victoria Police and was also taken to the hospital for treatment before being charged with murder.
In court, Sheffield's lawyer, Jacqui Kennedy, revealed that her client has multiple health issues, including being diagnosed with schizophrenia, which requires him to receive fortnightly depot injections. She also mentioned that he suffers from epilepsy, diabetes, and chronic heart problems.
Throughout the hearing, Sheffield could be seen crying and even waved at his family members who were there to support him. The prosecution requested more time to gather evidence, but the Magistrate, Felicity Broughton, denied their request. She stated that the police have the usual six weeks to put together a brief of evidence.
As Sheffield was remanded in custody and escorted out of the courtroom by officers, one of his supporters shouted, "I love you mate." The accused is scheduled to return to court in February for a committal mention hearing.
