A nonprofit in Charlotte is building affordable housing for people who were previously incarcerated through a $2 million deal.
In an exciting development for the Charlotte community, a local reentry nonprofit has successfully secured a deal to provide affordable housing for former inmates and their families. Freedom Fighting Missionaries, led by founder Kenneth Robinson, announced earlier this month that they have purchased a plot of land in the University City area for $1 million. This marks a significant milestone for the organization as it becomes the first black-founded group to own land and create housing for public use.

The idea for this project first came about in 2020 when Robinson founded FFM with the mission to support individuals who are re-entering society after serving time in prison. With the help of the Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg County, the organization was able to secure $4 million in funding to make this vision a reality. Originally, FFM planned to build two housing developments in close proximity to each other. However, a 16-unit project faced opposition from neighboring residents at a City Council meeting.

Despite this setback, Robinson remains overjoyed and grateful for the opportunity to provide a fresh start for those in need. He understands firsthand the challenges of starting from scratch after being released from prison, and is determined to offer support and resources to make the transition smoother for others. "I know how it feels to come home from prison and have to start from scratch. Now, I am able to support those that are re-entering society so that they can start fresh with sustainable services and viable resources along with a roof over their heads," Robinson shared. "This is what true impact feels like. It is truly a proud moment for me and those that have helped me along the way to see this opportunity come to fruition."

The new property will feature a 24-unit housing complex, with two and three-bedroom units available for families earning 30% to 80% of the average median income. As part of their efforts to provide comprehensive support for their constituents, FFM has partnered with Inlivian, a nonprofit real estate holding company, and the Charlotte Continuum of Care to allocate Emergency Housing Vouchers to those in need. Initially, 18 vouchers were allotted to the organization, and an official partnership was formed with Inlivian to provide housing choice vouchers for residents returning from incarceration.

This partnership is a significant step forward in addressing the city's growing affordable housing and homelessness crisis. According to QCity Metro, in 2022, more than 75% of the incarcerated and homeless populations in Mecklenburg County, the largest in North Carolina, were Black. Many individuals with criminal backgrounds face discrimination and barriers that make it difficult to secure housing. "Freedom Fighting Missionaries have families who make $70,000 or $100,000 or more, but they still have a criminal background, making it difficult to rent a place," Robinson explained.

Through this new project, FFM will be able to continue offering vital services to their constituents, including jail release transition support, court advocacy, and public transportation assistance. Rent for the units will vary, with prices starting at $457 and potentially going up to $1,600. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with families being able to move in as early as late 2025. This is just the first step for FFM, and they hope to expand their reach and impact in the future. This project is a testament to the organization's determination and dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of those they serve.
