Last week, a 27-year-old man from Manteno, Myles J. Swets, found himself in hot water when he was arrested on a warrant. The charges against him were two counts of aggravated driving under the influence. This was all due to a tragic three-car crash that occurred in rural Monee. The incident resulted in the loss of life for a Beecher man and injuries for his wife. According to Will County sheriff's police and online court records, the crash took place on West Pauling Road, about a mile east of Route 50, at approximately 9:30 a.m. on January 15th.
Reports from sheriff's police indicate that Swets was behind the wheel when he veered off the road and onto the shoulder. His vehicle collided with a parked car, which unfortunately contained Mattew B. Eisele, 39, and his wife. The impact caused the parked car to then hit another vehicle before ultimately coming to rest in a nearby field. It's worth noting that the Eiseles had pulled over to help another couple with a flat tire. However, both couples had returned to their respective vehicles on the shoulder to seek warmth while waiting for a necessary tool. To ensure their safety, Eisele had even placed reflective placards behind his vehicle.
Tragically, Eisele had to be rescued from his vehicle by Monee fire officials. He was then rushed to Olympia Fields Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m. His wife also suffered injuries and was taken to South Suburban Hospital for treatment of cuts and back pain. Thankfully, the passengers in the third vehicle involved, a 17-year-old female from Oak Forest and an 18-year-old male from Beecher, were not injured and declined medical attention.
As if the situation couldn't get any worse, it was later revealed that Swets was currently on probation. In fact, he had pleaded guilty just the previous November to possessing a controlled substance in March of 2023. Now, he faced even more serious charges. On May 9th, he was indicted for aggravated DUI causing death and aggravated DUI causing injury. According to court records, he is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing this Friday at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.
It's a tragic and unfortunate event that has left a community reeling. Dennis Sullivan, a freelance reporter for the Daily Southtown, has been following the case closely. Our thoughts go out to the loved ones of the victim and we hope justice will be served in a fair and just manner.
