Fern Britton, the former presenter of This Morning, made a surprise appearance on the show recently, leaving fans wondering if she might make a comeback. The popular morning show has faced a lot of scrutiny lately, with the departure of long-time hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, as well as the news of former co-stars Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford's divorce after 14 years of marriage.
Currently, This Morning is helmed by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, with the recent addition of Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard to the presenting team. However, there may be another familiar face making a return to the show.
Fern, who left This Morning in 2009 after a decade on the show, has been keeping busy with various projects, including a stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2012 and a recent appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. But during her guest appearance on This Morning in March, she revealed that ITV had approached her about the possibility of returning to the show.
Speaking to Woman and Home magazine, Fern shared, "When my interview finished and I left the studio, I was approached by a member of the production team who said, 'Would you like to do some little films with us?'" While nothing has been confirmed yet, Fern seemed excited about the idea, saying, "Those little four-minute films now and again? Perfect. If I could just do them in Cornwall, that would be even more perfect!"
Fern also fondly reminisced about her time on the show, and the people she worked with, who have encouraged her to consider a return. "So many of the team that I worked with are still there and it was a real trip down memory lane," she shared. "It was wonderful to be close to people who meant a lot to me."
When asked about her future plans in TV, Fern expressed her interest in doing interviews and even discussing politics. "I'm not interested in party politics, but politicians and where the minds of those characters that we vote for are at," she explained. She also had some strong opinions on the current state of affairs, saying, "Politicians need to start speaking honestly to the country and understanding what's going on in the world, including the Brexit situation. They're desperately trying to cover up the terrible things that are happening because of that."
Fern also had positive things to say about This Morning's new additions, Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, saying they "very much got" her vote. "It's very good to see Cat back," she added. "She's been in America, gaining more experience, but to viewers, she's fresh. Fresh, female, more mature, experienced, and very nice – she's got a lot going for her. And Ben is simply 100% lovely."
Aside from her potential return to This Morning, Fern also opened up about her personal life, discussing her separation from husband Phil Vickery in 2020. She revealed that she has no desire to get married again, saying, "I don't ever want to marry again."
Whether or not Fern makes a comeback to This Morning, she is determined to jumpstart her TV career once more. In fact, sources close to her have revealed that she is already planning her big TV comeback and is eager to host her own chat show.
During her time on Celebrity Big Brother, Fern also spoke about her "falling out" with Phillip Schofield, saying they "no longer speak." In his 2020 biography, Phillip shared that their feud started over the content of a This Morning episode and that it was the final straw for Fern.
Phillip himself left This Morning in 2023 after admitting to lying about having an affair with a runner on the show. The Agency has reached out to ITV and Fern Britton's team for comment on the matter.
