Demi Moore recently reflected on the pressure she felt to lose weight after giving birth to her daughter Scout. In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the 61-year-old actress opened up about the intense expectations she faced in Hollywood and the extreme measures she took to try and slim down.
It was 1991 and Demi was working on the film Indecent Proposal just months after welcoming her second daughter with then-husband Bruce Willis. She revealed that she would cycle 30 miles to and from the set each day, all while juggling the demands of being a new mother.
"I was feeding her [Scout] through the night, getting up in the dark with a trainer … biking all the way to Paramount, even on location where we were shooting; then shooting a full day, which is usually a 12-hour day; and then starting all over again," Demi shared.
Looking back, Demi admitted that she put too much pressure on herself and was constantly pushing herself to lose weight. She even recalled being told by others to slim down, which was both embarrassing and humiliating. But ultimately, she realized that it was her own high expectations that were driving her to such extreme measures.
At the time, losing the baby weight meant everything to Demi. She was determined to get back to her pre-pregnancy body and was willing to do whatever it took. But now, with hindsight, she realizes that it didn't actually matter that much in the grand scheme of things.
"Yeah. But you look back and you kinda go, 'Did it really matter that much?' Probably not! But at the time, I made it mean everything," Demi said.
Today, Demi's body positivity fluctuates. Some days she feels confident and proud of her appearance, while other days she finds herself focusing on things she doesn't like. But the difference now is that she can catch herself and remind herself to make the best of what she has, rather than constantly chasing what she doesn't.
Meanwhile, Demi recently revealed that she lost 20lbs while filming her new movie, The Substance, due to the intense physical demands of her role. She even suffered from shingles during the shoot, but she was determined to give her all and bring her character to life on screen.
Now, Demi is focused on being kinder to herself and embracing her body as it is. And she hopes to inspire others to do the same. As she says, "It's what you want to bring to it."
