A DoorDash worker has been taken into police custody after a surveillance video showed her allegedly spraying a substance on a food order that she delivered. The reason behind her actions? She claims to have been trying to get rid of a spider.
According to a news release from the McCracken County Sheriff's Office, Kourtney Stevenson has been arrested and is facing serious charges. These include two counts of Battery Resulting in Moderate Injury as Level 6 felonies and two counts of Consumer Product Tampering as Level 5 felonies.
The incident occurred in Evansville, Indiana, in the early hours of December 7th. Mark Cardin, who had ordered food from Arby's through DoorDash, brought the delivery into his home. However, when his wife started eating, she suddenly had difficulty breathing. Concerned, Cardin checked the bag and discovered that it had been sprayed with a substance. He then reviewed his security camera footage and confirmed that Stevenson was responsible for the incident. He immediately contacted both DoorDash and the police department to report the incident.
Following an investigation, the police department obtained DoorDash records which identified Stevenson as the delivery driver. After being contacted, Stevenson agreed to be interviewed by officers. During the call, she admitted to using pepper spray on the bag, but claimed that it was because she saw a spider and was scared.
However, authorities pointed out that the temperature on the night of the incident was only 35 degrees, which is too cold for spiders to be outside and crawling on exposed surfaces. Stevenson later called back to cancel her scheduled interview. As a result, a warrant was issued for her arrest and she was taken into custody by the McCracken County Sheriff's Office in Kentucky the following morning. She is currently being held without bond and will be extradited to Indiana.
Sheriff Noah Robinson expressed concern over the incident, stating that people should be able to trust that the food they order for their families is safe. He commended the detectives for their work and thanked the McCracken County Sheriff's Office and Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office for their assistance in the arrest.
